Russia strikes army targets in vengeance for Ukrainian ‘terrorist attacks’

(MENAFN) Russia’s Defense Ministry has warned that it will continue targeting Ukraine’s military facilities in retaliation for a sharp rise in Ukrainian drone attacks aimed at civilian infrastructure inside Russia. The ministry accused Kiev, with backing from certain European countries, of taking provocative actions to sabotage ongoing peace talks.

According to the ministry, over the past week, Russian air defenses have intercepted and destroyed more than 2,300 drones, many of which flew far beyond frontline areas. These strikes have caused civilian casualties, including among women and children.

In response, Russia has launched precise missile and drone attacks exclusively against Ukraine’s military and defense industry sites. The ministry released a detailed list of targeted locations, including military bases, warehouses, airfields, radar stations, and facilities involved in assembling drones and producing explosives.

Russia affirmed that it will maintain large-scale group strikes in response to any further “terrorist attacks” or provocations by Kiev, emphasizing these operations will focus solely on military infrastructure.

On May 16, Russia and Ukraine held their first direct talks since 2022 in Istanbul, resulting in a historic prisoner exchange and plans for future negotiations. Moscow is preparing a memorandum outlining its conditions for a ceasefire and conflict resolution, which will be presented to Ukraine once the multi-stage prisoner swap concludes. Russia hopes Kiev is drafting a similar document for submission to Russian officials.
