Kremlin comments on Macron slap
(MENAFN) Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov avoided directly commenting on the incident where French President Emmanuel Macron was pushed in the face by his wife, Brigitte, calling it a private family matter. However, he remarked that a wife never slaps her husband without a reason, though emphasized it was not Russia’s concern.
The moment was caught on camera as the French presidential couple arrived in Hanoi, Vietnam, on May 25. The footage shows Macron speaking off-camera when two arms in red sleeves reach out to push his face, covering his mouth and jaw. Macron responded by stepping back, smiling, and waving at the cameras. Brigitte Macron, wearing a red jacket, then appeared beside him. The video quickly went viral, but Macron later dismissed it as playful bickering.
Peskov said it was inappropriate for Russia to comment on the Macron family’s private affairs but swiftly shifted focus to criticizing France’s stance on Russia. He accused Paris of mistakenly believing that pressuring Moscow could lead to results, calling this a fundamental misunderstanding of Russia’s nature. Peskov expressed regret that the French leader fails to grasp the reality of the situation.
Since the Ukraine conflict escalated in February 2022, France has provided over €3.8 billion ($4.2 billion) in military aid to Kiev. Paris has also proposed deploying French troops to Ukraine if a peace deal is reached, aiming to serve as a deterrent against Russia. In March, Macron announced a joint French-British plan to prepare such a “reassurance force” for a ceasefire scenario, sparking protests in Paris over NATO’s militaristic approach.
Russia has consistently warned against any NATO troop presence in Ukraine, blaming the military alliance’s expansion in Europe as a key factor behind the conflict.
