Lavrov, Rubio talk about Ukrainian assaults on Russia
The call came after a series of sabotage incidents and drone strikes in Russia. Two bridges in the Bryansk and Kursk regions collapsed on June 1, killing at least seven people and injuring dozens more. Russia’s Investigative Committee confirmed the events were the result of bomb attacks. That same day, military airfields in five Russian regions—Murmansk, Ivanovo, Ryazan, Irkutsk, and Amur—were targeted by kamikaze drones.
The Russian Foreign Ministry reported that Rubio extended his condolences over the casualties from the bridge bombings. Lavrov assured that a full investigation is underway, promising that the perpetrators will be identified and held accountable.
The two diplomats also discussed diplomatic solutions to the Ukraine conflict, including the upcoming Russia-Ukraine negotiations in Istanbul on June 2. U.S. State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce stated that Rubio echoed former President Trump’s call for continued direct dialogue to secure lasting peace.
Meanwhile, Russia launched retaliatory strikes on Ukrainian military facilities and infrastructure in response to the drone raids. The Russian Defense Ministry reported most attacks were intercepted, though some inflicted material damage.
Ukrainian media has claimed the strikes were part of a long-planned operation dubbed “Spiderweb,” aimed at targeting Russia’s strategic aviation assets.
