Annalena Baerbock gets selected as UN General Assembly

(MENAFN) According to recent reports, Annalena Baerbock, who previously served as Germany’s foreign minister, has been elected to preside over the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly.

The election, held via secret ballot, saw Baerbock receive 167 out of 188 votes, while 14 countries chose to abstain. She will officially assume the role in September 2025, taking over from Philemon Yang of Cameroon, the current president of the General Assembly.

Following her election, Baerbock addressed the assembly, emphasizing her commitment to impartiality and cooperation among all UN member states. “As president of the General Assembly, I will engage in a trust-based dialogue with all member states,” she stated, underlining her dedication to fostering unity and mutual respect within the global body.

The upcoming session is expected to carry significant weight, especially given the mounting pressures on the UN system, both in terms of geopolitics and finances. Baerbock acknowledged these challenges in her speech, highlighting the persistence of global violence. “More than 120 armed conflicts remind us that the primary mission of the United Nations — to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war — remains unaccomplished,” she remarked.

She also stressed the urgency of revitalizing efforts to reach the Sustainable Development Goals, which are lagging behind expectations. “Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals will remain elusive without bold, ambitious, accelerated, just and transformative actions as we committed to in the Pact for the Future,” she added.

Despite the hurdles, Baerbock reaffirmed the indispensable role of the United Nations in addressing international issues. “We also need to join efforts now to preserve what the United Nations has achieved since its establishment in 1945 to address the current global crisis and to adapt to emerging future challenges,” she said.

The UN Secretary-General also commented on Baerbock’s election, noting that she steps into the position at a particularly turbulent and unpredictable time for international cooperation.
