Dutch Government Collapses as Far-Right PVV Quits Over Migration Rift

(MENAFN) The Dutch government, led by Prime Minister Dick Schoof, disintegrated Tuesday after the far-right Party for Freedom (PVV) abruptly exited the ruling coalition amid a standoff over asylum and migration reforms.

The coalition—comprising the conservative VVD, centrist NSC, and agrarian BBB parties—failed to reconcile differences with PVV leader Geert Wilders, who demanded sweeping asylum policy overhauls.

"No signature, no adjustments, so PVV leaves the coalition," Wilders declared on X.

Holding a pivotal position in the coalition, Wilders pushed for ten stringent measures to be incorporated into the coalition agreement. These included closing borders to asylum seekers, ramping up military border enforcement, reducing the number of asylum centers, and deporting Syrian refugees currently on temporary residence permits, as reported by a news outlet.

"If nothing or not enough changes, the PVV is gone," Wilders had warned a day earlier.
In response, leaders of the remaining coalition partners expressed frustration and condemnation.

VVD head Dilan Yesilgoz criticized, "He chooses his own ego and his own interests. I am astonished. He throws away the chance for a right-wing policy. This is super irresponsible."

BBB leader Caroline van der Plas accused Wilders of deliberately sabotaging the coalition: "He holds all the cards and is deliberately pulling the plug."
