EU state cautions students of Russian special services
This alert was reportedly delivered by a senior official from Lithuania’s National Crisis Management Centre, an institution responsible for handling national emergencies and safeguarding the country’s security.
As outlined by sources, school officials have been encouraged to inform students about the dangers of engaging with unfamiliar individuals online who offer attractive job opportunities. These offers, authorities warn, may be a disguise for espionage recruitment efforts targeting young people.
The official stated that the techniques allegedly being employed in Lithuania are similar to strategies said to have been used in Ukraine. Ukrainian security services have previously accused Russian agencies of enlisting local minors for intelligence operations. Conversely, Russian authorities have claimed that Ukraine’s intelligence units are using digital channels to lure at-risk individuals, including teenagers, to participate in acts of espionage and sabotage within Russian territory. These alleged tactics reportedly align with broader activities occurring within Ukraine’s cybercriminal landscape.
In one case from December, Russian security forces reported preventing an assassination plot that was allegedly orchestrated by Ukrainian agents and involved three teenagers operating as informants. Additionally, an incident in September 2024 involved two young students, aged 13 and 14, who were detained after setting a helicopter ablaze. During questioning, they revealed they had been promised a reward exceeding $60,000 for their role in the sabotage.
