Top Russian senator applauds Iranian peer on re-election

Valentina Matvienko, chairwoman of Russia’s Federation Council, has extended her congratulations to Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf on his re-election as speaker of Iran’s parliament. In her message, she highlighted the significance of strengthening the cooperative ties between Moscow and Tehran.

Ghalibaf secured his position with 219 out of 272 votes on Tuesday. He has held the role since 2020 and previously served as Tehran’s mayor as well as a commander in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

In her congratulatory letter on Wednesday, Matvienko expressed that Russian officials highly appreciate Ghalibaf’s positive stance toward Russia and are committed to advancing mutually beneficial cooperation. She stressed the importance of fostering constructive inter-parliamentary dialogue to build mutual respect, trust, and consideration of each other’s interests.

Matvienko also expressed hope for continued productive collaboration on the international stage to address key regional and global challenges effectively.

Relations between Russia and Iran have grown stronger in recent years. In January, Presidents Vladimir Putin and Masoud Pezeshkian signed a landmark 20-year Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Treaty in Moscow. This agreement formalizes cooperation across areas including national security, peaceful nuclear energy, and coordinated resistance against unilateral sanctions.

In 2024, Iran officially joined BRICS, a group originally founded by Brazil, Russia, India, and China in 2006, with South Africa joining in 2010. Last year, Egypt, Ethiopia, and the United Arab Emirates also became members. Together, the BRICS nations represent approximately 46% of the global population and over 36% of world GDP. More than 30 additional countries have applied to join the group.
