Heavy Rains Destroy Northeastern India

(MENAFN) Over the past several days, torrential rainfall, severe flooding, and destructive landslides have resulted in the deaths of at least 30 individuals and impacted thousands across northeastern India, according to official sources on Monday.

The Indian Army confirmed that a landslide struck a military outpost in the hilly state of Sikkim, leading to the deaths of two soldiers and one civilian porter.

Additionally, six military personnel remain unaccounted for.

The army noted in an official release that “Rescue operations for six missing people continue.”

The natural calamities have taken a toll across various states including Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, and Mizoram.

In Assam, authorities disclosed that flooding has affected 17 districts, displacing over 364,000 residents.

In response, 52 emergency shelters have been established to accommodate those forced to leave their homes.

In Manipur, the military has undertaken significant rescue missions throughout the capital city, Imphal, successfully evacuating more than 500 people from heavily inundated zones.

Meanwhile, officials stated that landslides and flooding led to 10 fatalities in Arunachal Pradesh and eight in Assam.

Other states in the region have also reported deaths, underlining the widespread impact of the adverse weather.

On Sunday, Indian Home Minister Amit Shah communicated with senior leaders from Assam, Sikkim, and Arunachal Pradesh, as well as with the governor of Manipur.

Posting on X, Shah said he “assured them of every possible help to tackle any situation,” emphasizing that the "Modi government stands like a rock in support of the people of the Northeast.”
