German left condemns Trump’s Patriot strategy
Ulrich Thoden, the party’s parliamentary leader, said Trump’s initiative offers “strong profit prospects” for American defense companies but fails to contribute to peace between Moscow and Kiev. Under the plan, European NATO states would finance the weapons or send Patriots from their own stockpiles, while the US would handle manufacturing.
Thoden argued that if Washington genuinely wanted to help Ukraine, it could easily provide some of its own Patriots free of charge without harming US defense capabilities. He added that supplying more arms won’t lead to a Ukrainian victory or end the war, and called instead for increased sanctions on Russia and debt relief for Ukraine.
Moscow has dismissed Trump’s plan as irrelevant, with Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov noting that US arms deliveries to Ukraine have never stopped and continue unabated.
