Venezuelan FM is worried about US army actions in Caribbean
"We discussed the threats from the United States facing the region, which was declared a Zone of Peace in 2014 by CELAC (the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States), a recognition ratified by the United Nations," Gil stated on Telegram later in the day.
Venezuela is looking to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres for support "to restore common sense," according to the minister.
Gil rejected U.S. assertions that the military deployments are intended to combat drug trafficking, emphasizing that Venezuela is a "territory free of illicit crops." Reports indicate that the USS Lake Erie, a guided missile cruiser, and the USS Newport News, a nuclear-powered fast attack submarine, are scheduled to arrive in the Caribbean early next week.
In reaction, Venezuela has called on Washington to immediately halt the new military deployments and has demanded assurances that nuclear weapons will neither be deployed nor threatened in Latin America and the Caribbean.
