Man gets convicted for trying to assassinate Trump in 2024 elections

(MENAFN) A US jury on Tuesday found Ryan Wesley Routh, a pro-Ukraine activist, guilty of attempting to assassinate former President Donald Trump during his 2024 reelection campaign, according to reports.

Authorities said Routh had prepared a “sniper’s hide” near the perimeter of Trump’s Florida golf course but was discovered by a Secret Service agent, who fired at him, causing him to flee, as stated by the Justice Department. Routh was later apprehended while trying to escape in his car. Officials reported that multiple mobile phones and a list of planned flights out of the country for that day were found in the vehicle.

“Today’s guilty verdict against would-be Trump assassin Ryan Routh illustrates the Department of Justice’s commitment to punishing those who engage in political violence,” Attorney General Pamela Bondi said in a statement released by the DOJ. She added that the attack was not just against the US president, “but an affront to our very nation itself.”

Routh was convicted of attempting to assassinate a major presidential candidate, possession of a firearm in furtherance of a violent crime, and several other charges. He is facing life imprisonment when sentenced later this year.
