Musk Rolls Out New Online Encyclopedia to Challenge Wikipedia's Bias
(MENAFN) Elon Musk has revealed plans to launch a new online encyclopedia named Grokipedia, aiming to compete with Wikipedia, which he and other critics accuse of political bias. Musk asserted that his platform will be a “massive improvement” over the existing site.
The new service will be powered by Musk’s xAI company, utilizing its generative AI model Grok—already integrated into Musk’s social media platform X. Following Tuesday’s announcement, Musk shared a range of user responses, including a parody logo combining Grok and Wikipedia, a meme portraying Musk as the grim reaper poised to dismantle Wikipedia, and advice from Wikipedia co-founder-turned-critic Larry Sanger on maintaining neutrality in user-edited knowledge platforms.
Musk introduced Grokipedia in reaction to a post by White House crypto and cyber adviser David Sacks, who criticized Wikipedia as “the work of an army of left-wing activists” rather than the neutral, consensus-driven resource it claims to be. Sacks emphasized that Wikipedia’s dominance in Google search results and its influence in AI training data make this alleged bias “a huge problem.”
This critique follows a recent interview where Sanger told a journalist that Wikipedia’s editorial policies—like excluding conservative sources from its list of “reliable sources”—create systemic bias.
Conservative voices have long accused Wikipedia, which operates on donations, of failing to uphold neutrality on divisive issues. Musk has previously derided the platform, dubbing it “Wokipedia” and once jokingly offering $1 billion if it would rename itself “Dickipedia” for a year.
Acknowledging that Grok’s AI training included Wikipedia data, Musk promised that developers “should have this fixed by end of year.”
