Snowstorm Strands Hundreds on Mount Everest

(MENAFN) Nearly a thousand trekkers have been left stranded on Mount Everest’s eastern slopes after a powerful snowstorm obstructed access routes, as reported by Chinese media.

Rescue crews are said to be working at altitudes close to 5,000 meters (16,400 feet), facing extremely challenging conditions.

The heavy snowfall began on Friday evening and persisted through Saturday, covering trails and camping grounds situated at an average elevation of 4,200 meters (13,800 feet).

Communication with several sections of the mountain reportedly remains disrupted.

Visual footage from the area shows numerous tents either buried or torn apart by the thick snow. Climbers can be seen trudging through deep snowdrifts, with some maneuvering cautiously around snow-laden vehicles, while others have constructed makeshift shelters.

According to reports, hundreds of nearby residents and emergency crews were mobilized to help clear snow that has been blocking routes into the area. Entry and ticket sales for the entire Everest Scenic Area were halted as of late Saturday.

The harsh weather has also impacted communities at the mountain’s base.

A news agency states that at least 47 individuals in Nepal have died since Friday due to intense rainfall, which led to flash floods and landslides, obstructing roads and demolishing bridges.
