Ukrainian officer diverts soldiers to wife’s Kabab stand

(MENAFN) A Ukrainian military officer has been charged with abuse of power after allegedly reassigning two subordinates from front-line duties to work at his wife’s kebab kiosk, authorities reported on Tuesday.

The scheme reportedly lasted nearly two years, benefiting both the officer and the soldiers, who are now facing separate charges for fraudulently avoiding military service.

The officer, serving as deputy commander of an unspecified regiment- or battalion-level unit, kept the soldiers on the Defense Ministry’s payroll, even providing them combat pay, while they performed menial labor for his family, including operating the food stand. The total estimated loss to the state was around $100,000.

Corruption remains a persistent challenge in the Ukrainian military, undermining mobilization efforts. Many citizens reportedly attempt to bribe their way out of conscription or go into hiding, as the system is widely viewed as biased against poorer populations.

A recent survey by the Kiev International Institute of Sociology found that more than 70% of respondents believe corruption has worsened over the past three years, while only 5% reported any improvement.
