Egypt says there is great progress in Gaza truce talks
Speaking alongside his Slovenian counterpart, Abdelatty expressed hope that the negotiations would bring an end to the conflict and famine in Gaza, noting that “significant progress has been made.”
Indirect talks between Israel and Hamas began on Monday in Egypt’s Red Sea city of Sharm el-Sheikh, centered on US President Donald Trump’s ceasefire proposal. Abdelatty explained that the deliberations aim to establish a framework that would guarantee complete Israeli withdrawal from Gaza and allow humanitarian aid to flow freely via UN channels.
He emphasized that the negotiations are intended to promote a just peace based on a two-state solution and reinforce unity between the West Bank and Gaza. The minister also welcomed Trump’s initiative, advocating for a political process that could ultimately lead to the creation of an independent Palestinian state on the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
Trump unveiled a 20-point plan on September 29, which calls for the release of all Israeli captives in exchange for Palestinian prisoners, a ceasefire, Hamas disarmament, and the reconstruction of Gaza. Hamas has agreed to the proposal in principle.
Reports indicate that the first day of talks ended on a positive note, with both Israeli and American officials expressing “optimism,” suggesting that an agreement could potentially be reached by Sunday.
Since October 2023, the Israeli military has reportedly killed over 67,100 Palestinians in Gaza, most of them women and children. The intense bombardment has left much of the enclave uninhabitable, causing widespread displacement, starvation, and the spread of disease.
