Many nations are eying to buy Indo-Russian supersonic missile—Modi
(MENAFN) Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Monday that several nations have expressed interest in purchasing the Indo-Russian BrahMos supersonic cruise missile after its successful use in India’s conflict with Pakistan earlier this year.
Speaking to naval personnel aboard the INS Vikrant during Diwali celebrations, Modi remarked that the name BrahMos “strikes fear in the minds of some people.”
“Our missiles like BrahMos and Akash have proved their capability in Operation Sindoor,” he said, referring to India’s four-day military confrontation with Pakistan in May. “Now many countries in the world want to buy these missiles.”
BrahMos Aerospace, a joint venture between India and Russia, derives its name from the Brahmaputra and Moskva rivers. India’s Defense Research and Development Organization holds a 50.5% stake, while Russia’s NPO Mashinostroyenia owns 49.5%.
Modi’s remarks came shortly after the first batch of BrahMos missiles produced at the BrahMos Integration and Testing Facility Centre in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, was handed over to the Indian armed forces.
The center, part of the Uttar Pradesh Defense Industrial Corridor, was virtually inaugurated by Defense Minister Rajnath Singh in May. According to the Defense Ministry, the first set of missiles was ready for deployment within five months.
During the inauguration, Singh noted that BrahMos had secured contracts valued at around $450 million with two countries and projected that the Lucknow unit’s turnover would reach about $340 million by 2026.
At a defense trade show last month, Modi reaffirmed that India is deepening its “time-tested partnership” with Russia.
