IOM Reports Over 1,500 Displaced in Sudan Amid RSF Violence

(MENAFN) The International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported on Sunday that escalating violence has forced 1,205 people to flee the cities of Bara and Umm Ruwaba in North Kordofan, while another 360 were displaced from Al-Abbasiya and Delami in South Kordofan.

According to the IOM, teams operating under its Displacement Tracking Matrix program estimated that 580 people left Bara and 625 departed Umm Ruwaba in North Kordofan. The displaced have relocated to multiple destinations within North Kordofan and to towns in White Nile state in southern Sudan.

This latest movement follows earlier displacements in North Kordofan, where 36,625 people were uprooted between Oct. 26-31, the organization reported.

In South Kordofan, 360 people were forced to move, including 180 from Al-Abbasiya and 180 from Delami. Many have relocated within the state and to Tandalti in White Nile state.

On Thursday, Sudanese authorities reported casualties from a drone attack by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on Zareba al-Sheikh al-Burai in North Kordofan.

Meanwhile, the Sudan Doctors Network said the RSF killed 38 civilians in Umm Dam Haj Ahmed, also in North Kordofan. Sudanese authorities added that on Monday, the RSF attacked the same town, committing violations against civilians and displacing roughly 1,850 people.

The RSF recently took control of Bara amid its ongoing war with the Sudanese army but denies targeting civilians.

On Oct. 26, the RSF captured El-Fasher in North Darfur and allegedly committed massacres against civilians, according to local and international organizations, raising fears the assault could cement Sudan’s geographic division.

RSF leader Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, widely known as “Hemedti,” acknowledged on Wednesday that “violations” had occurred by his forces in El-Fasher, asserting that investigation committees had been formed.

Since April 15, 2023, Sudan’s army and the RSF have been locked in a conflict that regional and international mediation efforts have failed to end. The fighting has claimed 20,000 lives and displaced more than 15 million people as refugees and internally displaced persons, according to UN and local reports.
