Iran’s ICT in discussions with Telegram to unblock app
(MENAFN) Iran’s Ministry of Information and Communications Technologies (ICT) has opened discussions with Telegram and other social media platforms to potentially lift the country’s long-standing ban on the services, an Iranian news agency reported on Wednesday.
According to the agency, Tehran will consider unblocking the apps if the platforms meet certain requirements outlined in a Supreme Council of Cyberspace resolution issued earlier this year. These conditions include compliance with national security rules, respect for Iran’s sovereignty, strengthening the rule of law, and avoiding harm to domestic social media platforms.
The resolution also designates specific members of the cyberspace watchdog to lead negotiations, while the ICT ministry bears primary responsibility for the talks.
Iran banned Telegram and other messaging apps in 2018, citing concerns that they were being used by anti-government groups to incite violence and threaten national security during periods of political unrest. Despite the official restrictions, many Iranians have continued using Telegram and other foreign apps by accessing them via Virtual Private Networks (VPNs).
