Explosion Occurs at Supermarket in Mexico
The incident took place after a fire erupted at a Waldo's outlet located in Hermosillo, in the northwestern state of Sonora.
While official statistics have yet to be confirmed, early media accounts suggest the preliminary death toll stands at 23, with over 10 others suffering injuries.
Authorities managed to bring the fire under control, and a formal inquiry has been initiated to identify the origin of the explosion.
Investigators are reportedly exploring the possibility of a gas leak or accumulation of fuel as potential causes, according to a media outlet.
The Sonora public security secretariat clarified on US social media platform X that the incident was not “an attack or an event related to a violent act against civilians.”
President Claudia Sheinbau offered her sympathies to those affected by the tragedy.
"I have been in contact with the governor of Sonora, Alfonso Durazo, to provide support as needed. I instructed the Secretary of the Interior, Rosa Icela Rodriguez, to send a support team in order to assist the families and the injured," she stated on X.
