US, China Commit to Strengthening Military Communication Channels
"Admiral Dong and I also agreed that we should set up military-to-military channels to deconflict and deescalate any problems that arise. We have more meetings on that coming soon," Hegseth wrote on the U.S. social media platform X.
He emphasized that harmony, stability, and constructive diplomatic ties represent the "best path" forward for both countries.
"As President Trump said, his historic 'G2 meeting' set the tone for everlasting peace and success for the U.S. and China. The Department of War will do the same — peace through strength, mutual respect, and positive relations," Hegseth added.
The discussion between Dong and Hegseth took place on Friday in Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia, during a gathering of defense ministers from Southeast Asian nations under the ASEAN framework.
Hegseth additionally conferred with his counterparts from Australia, Japan, and the Philippines to address issues of deterrence and preparedness in the South China Sea region.
"We share an ongoing commitment to ensure peace and stability in the region and are resolute in our partnership to maintain peace through strength," he reiterated on X.
U.S. President Donald Trump also convened with Chinese leader Xi Jinping on Thursday in the South Korean port city of Busan — a meeting he referred to as “G2,” symbolizing the Group of Two.
