Russia holds ceremony to unveil its new nuclear submarine
The unveiling ceremony took place in Severodvinsk, attended by Russian Defense Minister Andrey Belousov and other senior military officials. “Today is a significant event for us: the heavy nuclear-powered missile cruiser Khabarovsk is being launched from the slipway of the renowned Sevmash shipyard,” Belousov said.
“Carrying underwater weapons and robotic systems, it will enable us to successfully accomplish missions related to ensuring the security of Russia’s maritime borders and protecting its national interests in various parts of the world’s oceans,” he added. The minister noted that the submarine still has to undergo a series of sea trials and wished success to its crew and builders.
Former Chief of the Russian Navy’s General Staff, Admiral Viktor Kravchenko, told reporters that the Khabarovsk “was specifically designed and built for the Poseidon.” Russian President Vladimir Putin has claimed that the Poseidon cannot currently be intercepted by any existing defenses.
Earlier this week, Russia conducted successful tests of the Poseidon drone, along with its unlimited-range Burevestnik cruise missile, Putin announced.
The announcement comes amid stalled Ukraine peace negotiations and reports of potential US Tomahawk missile supplies to Kyiv. US President Donald Trump recently stated that he had instructed the Department of War to begin testing nuclear weapons in the context of strategic competition with Russia and China.
Despite the heightened activity, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said Russia is “still not” engaged in an arms race with the United States when asked about the recent weapons tests.
