Google to Pour Tens of Millions into Maldives Submarine Cable Hub

(MENAFN) Google will pour tens of millions of dollars into constructing an international submarine cable landing station and network hub in Addu, the Maldives, the island nation's government revealed.

The Maldives' Ministry of Economic Development and Trade announced the major infrastructure investment Monday, confirming the facility will accommodate multiple international submarine cable systems simultaneously, according to the official statement.

The ministry emphasized the project underscores the archipelago's capacity to expand emerging industries including cloud services, fintech, digital content, and technology start-ups, marking a critical step in the Maldivian government's campaign to broaden economic dependence beyond tourism.

The Maldives are naturally positioned for connectivity hubs to help improve digital connectivity for the region, including Africa, the Middle East, South Asia and Oceania, according to an article published Tuesday on Google Cloud's official website detailing the initiative.

The strategic location of the Maldives positions the nation as an ideal gateway for enhancing digital infrastructure across multiple continents, with the new landing station expected to strengthen internet connectivity throughout underserved regions.

Google's commitment represents one of the largest technology infrastructure investments in the Maldives in recent years, signaling growing international recognition of the nation's geographic advantages for global data transmission networks.
