India’s Aviation Regulator Issues Warning to IndiGo
The Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) announced on Sunday that it has prolonged the deadline for IndiGo Airlines to reply to a “show-cause” notice explaining why action should not be imposed against it.
The “show-cause” notice was initially sent to IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers on December 6. Subsequently, the airline requested additional time to respond.
Flight interruptions left thousands of passengers stuck at airports last week as IndiGo struggled to comply with Flight Duty Time Limitations (FDTL) regulations, which came into force on November 1.
IndiGo, which holds a 60% share of India’s domestic market and operates over 2,000 flights daily, has canceled more than 2,000 flights since last Tuesday.
The disruptions also resulted in a sharp surge in airfares across the country.
To mitigate the impact and help restore schedules, the DGCA provided a temporary FDTL exemption for IndiGo’s A320 fleet, according to a media outlet.
