Migrant Boat Capsizes in English Channel, Leaving Four Dead

(MENAFN) Four people have lost their lives after a vessel capsized in the English Channel on the French side Thursday morning, local media reported.

Preliminary figures released by local authorities indicate that 38 survivors were pulled from the water, with at least one person receiving treatment for hypothermia, a French news channel reported.

The boat went down well offshore near Boulogne-sur-Mer, in the northern French region of Hauts-de-France, as those aboard attempted to make the perilous crossing from France. Local authorities communicated the details directly to the news channel.

A large-scale emergency operation has been mobilized at the scene.

Officials have pointed the finger at people-smuggling networks for the deadly incident. The nationalities of the victims have not yet been established, media reported.
