California Governor Condemns Violence After Deadly San Diego Mosque Shooting
(MENAFN) California Governor Gavin Newsom has said the state will “not tolerate acts of terror” targeting religious communities following a fatal shooting at the Islamic Center of San Diego that left five people dead, including the two suspected attackers.
In a public statement, he expressed shock over the incident, saying he was “horrified by today’s violent attack at the Islamic Center of San Diego, where families and children gather, and neighbors worship in peace and fellowship.”
He added that the attack had devastated a community space used for worship and gathering, stating: “Today, this community space was shattered by gunfire. California sends our deepest condolences to the families and communities impacted by today’s shooting,”
Reinforcing the state’s position on protecting religious communities, he said: “Worshippers anywhere should not have to fear for their lives. Hate has no place in California, and we will not tolerate acts of terror or intimidation against communities of faith,”
He also addressed the Muslim community directly, stating: “To the San Diego Muslim community: California stands with you.”
Law enforcement officials reported that three victims, including a security guard, were killed during the attack, while two suspected shooters were later found dead from what authorities believe were self-inflicted gunshot wounds.
The incident is under active investigation as authorities continue to examine motive and circumstances surrounding the shooting.
