Provided by AGPSpeaking ahead of a meeting of NATO foreign ministers in Helsingborg, Secretary General Mark Rutte said the alliance is entering a new phase in which responsibility for collective security is being more evenly distributed among members.
According to reports, Rutte emphasized that Europe and Canada are increasing their defense spending and operational commitments as the United States adjusts its broader strategic priorities.
“Part of keeping this alliance strong involves shifting responsibilities. Moving away from unhealthy over-reliance on one ally to a fairer sharing of the responsibility for our collective security,” he said.
“Europe and Canada are stepping up,” he added.
Rutte also addressed the planned recalibration of US troop levels in Europe, noting that such adjustments should be expected as Washington places greater strategic focus on other regions, including Asia.
He added that these changes would be coordinated within NATO structures and would not undermine alliance defense plans.
